9.00-10.30am Keynote address – Nathan Wallis, Brainwave Trust Aotearoa. Learning and Teaching: How Does Neuroscience Research Inform and Help Librarians? BOK 3.
Learning and teaching are traditionally seen as more an art than a science. While this is still true, we have in the last 20 years learnt a phenomenal amount about the biology and science of how the brain learns. An understanding of this neuroscience can better enable us to engage and meet the needs of the learner at their developmental stage. Nathan will summarise these findings and begin to explore the implications for librarians. What does this mean for us? How does technology figure into this equation? How does neuroscience research inform and help librarians?
10.30-11.00am Morning Tea
11.00am-12.00noon Adrienne Hannan, Children's & Youth Services Coordinator, Wellington City Libraries - The Human Developmental Aspect of Preschool Story Time . BOK 4.
Children’s Librarians are in a special position to assist with the development of young children. This is particularly relevant in settings such as preschool story times and similar programmes, where the librarian is the decision-maker over the language, concepts, actions, sounds and experiences the preschooler will be exposed to in these dedicated and focussed sessions. Librarians with a knowledge of how preschoolers develop and grow, and how they interpret and make meaning of the world around them, can make informed choices about preschool story time content and assist with their physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development. Adrienne will describe the training programme she runs for her preschool story time presenters, and will give insider tips on how to make your story times more developmentally focussed.
12.00noon-1.00pm Lunch Break. Please note: lunch is not provided. Food is available off-site or may be pre-ordered from the venue at your own expense.
1.00-1.30pm Julia de Ruiter, Library Assistant: Social Media, Waitaki District Libraries - Selfies in the Library: Using Social Media to Engage, Inspire and Inform. BOK 2
Social media has become an essential part of the online presence of libraries. But, many libraries are not using this tool in a mindful and strategic way. With the right knowledge, social media can be used effectively by librarians to engage your target audiences, inspire them and inform.
Social media should be used primarily to engage with your target audience but you should also aim to inspire your audience and show them the amazing services libraries offer. Social media can also be used as a way to inform your audience of the events, collections and resources the library holds.
This session will equip you with the necessary tools and knowledge to achieve social media success for your library.
1.00pm-1.30pm Concurrent Session - Paul du Temple, Managing Director, Wheelers - eBook platform consortium model.
Paul will update registrants on developments around Wheelers' eBook platform consortium model for schools/public libraries.
1.30-2.00pm Fiona Kerr, Youth Librarian, Waitaki District Libraries - Reconfiguring Oamaru Library’s Children’s Area with the Users in Mind. BOK 4 .
How many of you have seen a child on a climbing adventure reaching for a book high on a shelf? How many times do you try to help parents and children find books to read once their reading level has progressed because the collections don’t flow or are all mixed together? Who has seen the 7 year old wanting to get away from the baby books as well as his 9 year old sister?
Hear about changes made in the children’s area of Oamaru Library after considering the collections, the developmental needs of the children using the area, the physical space and the various activities that happen there.
This session will encourage you to consider ways in which changes to the layout of your collection and physical space will help further support positive library experiences for children and families.
1.00-2.00pm Concurrent Session - Te Ana Ngāi Tahu Māori Rock Art Centre Guided Tour. BOK 11. http://teana.co.nz Discounted price $10.00 per person (usual price $20.00). Oral and digital storytelling. 2.00-3.00pm Keynote Address - Sally Pewhairangi, Finding Heroes.
7 Vital Details Your Boss Expects You To Know About Digital Literacy. BOKs 4, 10.
Two recent developments, the Future-Focused Learning Report and the Result 10: Blueprint, indicate that the New Zealand education sector and the New Zealand government expect New Zealand library staff to be digitally literate.
In 2014, the New Zealand Future-Focused Learning Report suggested school libraries “take a stronger leadership role in using digital technologies to target achievement outcomes for at-risk students” and public libraries “offer digital literacy training programmes and internet connectivity”.
The goal of the Result 10 Blueprint: a strategy for digital public services is that by “2017 an average of 70% of New Zealanders’ most common transactions with government will be completed in a digital environment”. Public libraries are expected to contribute towards this goal by providing access and assistance to those who need it.
Due to their national significance, your boss is highly likely to read these reports or attend a presentation where these reports are discussed. It therefore seems inevitable that questions will start to be asked about what digital literacy means, in a practical sense, and how we can measure and improve the digital literacy of all library staff so that libraries are capable of meeting these expectations. Rather than duck for cover this presentation aims to provide you with some answers so you can respond to your boss with confidence.
This presentation will also describe the benefits of an online learning solution (launched in May 2015) aimed at teaching library staff digital literacy skills through self-paced, facilitated online courses that can be completed in just 60 minutes.
3.00-3.30pm Annette Beattie, Manager Digital Strategy & Business Development , Hutt City Libraries - Unlocking Curious Minds' Pilot: Game Programming . BOKs 2, 10.
In 2015 MBIE called for applications for funding to trial new programmes aimed at “unlocking curious minds”. The applications had to be something not already underway, not in schools, and be aimed at 10-18 year olds, particularly those in hard to reach and/ or high deprivation communities. Unlocking Curious Minds is all about inspiring curiosity and skills in science and technology. A perfect opportunity for libraries! This brief talk will summarise how Public Libraries NZ and seven libraries from around NZ piloted a series of game programming workshops alongside Wellington startup Gamefroot.
3.30-4.00pm Afternoon tea
4.00-5.00pm Bob Docherty, Independent Children's Book Reviewer & Literary Consultant - Bob’s Books. BOK 4.
Bob offers his knowledge and passion for children’s literature to promote reading and literacy to children and young adults.

Adrienne Hannan is the Children’s and Youth Services Coordinator at Wellington City Libraries and is also a soldier in the NZ Army. Being a soldier has given Adrienne useful skills and knowledge, and a mental toughness that translates well into a library environment. The military gets the job done despite the odds and setbacks because the consequences of not achieving the objective can be catastrophic. They receive skilled training to realise, interpret and understand the mission, and then to go on to achieve it -handy skills in a library setting, where budgets and resources can be tight. Adrienne will discuss how the 10 commandments of manoeuvre warfare can create a useful mind-set and action-points for achieving your objectives.
